Golfer to compete for Team Ireland in pair of international events

Selfridge

University of Toledo sophomore Chris Selfridge has been selected to represent Team Ireland in two events against some of the world’s top amateur players in South Africa in February.

Selfridge, who hails from Castledawson, Northern Ireland, will compete in the South Africa 10 Nations Cup Feb. 6-9, as well as the South African Amateur Stroke Play Event Feb. 12-15.

“This is an unbelievable opportunity for Chris to represent his country,” said Toledo Head Men’s Golf Coach Jamie Broce. “He had a great fall semester both on the course and in the classroom, and this is a great reward for his hard work.”

The 10 Nations Cup will be played in George, South Africa, at the Kingswood Golf Club, which is ranked among the Top 100 courses by Golf Digest. The tournament will utilize 18 holes of stroke play each day for each team of four players.

The South African Amateur Stroke Play competition will be held at Oubaii Golf Club in Western Cape with 18 holes being played the first two days before reducing the field to the top 65 players for the final two days.

The reigning Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year who is ranked 221st in the R&A’s world amateur rankings, Selfridge is third in the MAC with a 71.8 stroke average and won his first collegiate title in UT’s final event of the fall at the Georgetown Intercollegiate.
