The Ohio Department of Health has reported a significant increase in confirmed influenza-related hospitalizations throughout Ohio, including Lucas County.

To protect patients, visitors, staff and students, the provisions of policy 3364-109-EH-603 UTMC will be initiated effective immediately, University of Toledo Medical Center leadership announced today.

Signage will be placed at medical center entrances directing visitors younger than age 18 and adults with potential respiratory infections (cough, fever, congestion) to refrain from visiting loved ones in the hospital.

According to Norma Tomlinson, UTMC interim executive director, any hospital staff member who has elected to decline influenza vaccination this season will be required to wear a hospital-designated mask when in the medical center or clinics. The hospital-designated mask is a yellow mask (Lawson #2022). Staff members who have been vaccinated can be identified by the presence of a blue and gold 2013 flu sticker on their employee ID badges.

Questions relating to the influenza policy can be directed to the Infection Control Department.

UTMC staff who wish to be immunized should contact the nursing office at 419.383.5003 at any time to schedule an immunization.

“Flu prevention starts and ends with frequent hand-washing,” Tomlinson said. “Remember to always disinfect your hands thoroughly before and after patient contact or contact with any potentially contaminated surface.”
