Interdisciplinary artist to show films, conduct animation workshop

The UT Department of Theatre and Film will host a two-day artist’s residency with Johanna (Jo) Dery, who experiments with visual storytelling and makes short films, drawings, prints and little books.

She will present her internationally recognized animations on both 16mm film and digital video Friday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts Room 1039. She also will engage in a discussion with the audience after the screening.

Tickets — $5 for the general admission and $3 for students and seniors 60 and older — will be sold at the door. Admission is free for UT theatre and film majors with ID. Free refreshments will be provided.

Dery will teach a free animation workshop Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts Room 1039.

She is an assistant professor of animation in DePaul University’s School of Cinema and Interactive Media. See her work at jodery.com.

Among other venues, Dery’s works have screened at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation.

She has received grants from the LEF Foundation, the Free History Project and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.

Her drawings and prints have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Berlin. Dery’s little books can be found online at littleotsu.com.

Dery earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in film/animation/video from the Rhode Island School of Design and a master of fine arts degree in interdisciplinary arts from Goddard College.

She has completed residencies at the MacDowell Colony and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, as well as participated in an animation workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland.
