webemergencycodesTwo new colors have been added to The University of Toledo emergency code designations to alert individuals to a utility outage or violent situation at UT Medical Center or on Health Science Campus.

The new colors are copper for a utility outage and violet for a violent situation, and as with existing emergency codes, they would be announced over the public address system if warranted.

“The new codes, like their predecessors, provide an immediate awareness to students and staff about what is happening on campus,” said Michael Valigosky, director of the UT Safety and Health Department. “Code Copper represents the loss in any utilities on campus. Code Violet is for situations involving any individual exhibiting or threatening violent behavior.”

The addition of the two new codes is part of the University’s compliance efforts with the Joint Commission reaccreditation process and part of a statewide system for all hospitals in Ohio, Valigosky said.

“The code system is not only beneficial to the overall safety of students, staff and visitors at UTMC, but wherever students decide to go after UTMC, they will be familiar with the emergency plans of any given hospital in Ohio,” he said.

New name badges with an updated list of the UT emergency code designations will be available to staff in the future.
