A UToledo graduate student pursuing a master of liberal studies degree, Simiuc will compete in the women’s 1500m race. Prelims are scheduled for Friday.

“It is very exciting for Petronela to have this opportunity to compete at the European Championships representing her native Romania,” said Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. “Petronela is a high-level athlete with an incredible work ethic who sets the bar for our current Toledo student-athletes.

“To be selected to such an elite championship is a testament to her and how far she has come over the past year. She has taken a big step forward and this elite international competition is validation of that and a great steppingstone as she pursues qualifying for this summer’s Olympic games.”

In 2020, Simiuc set a then-MAC record in the indoor mile with a time of 4:34.59 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. She also set the Toledo indoor record in the 800m with a first-place time of 2:07.46 at the 2020 MAC Indoor Championships.
