Women’s basketball player named MAC Freshman of the Year

Newcomer Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

Bravo-Harriott becomes the fifth Rocket to earn this honor and the first since Kim Knuth captured the award in 1996.

The London, England, native is averaging 9.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.7 steals in 23.8 minutes per game. Bravo-Harriott ranks seventh in the conference in three-point field goals made (1.8), 12th in three-point field goal percentage (.340, 49 of 144) and 27th in scoring.

She has scored in double figures on 15 occasions this season, the second-highest total on the team.

Bravo-Harriott increased her production level as a starter over the last 10 games, contributing 12.8 points and 4.5 boards in 30.6 minutes (Feb. 7-March 9). She also has registered at least 10 points in eight contests during this stretch, including a season-best 24 points vs. Northern Illinois Feb. 18.

In MAC contests, Bravo-Harriott tallied 11.0 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, 1.9 assists per game and 0.9 steals per game in 27.1 minutes per game. She finished fifth in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.386, 39 of 101), seventh in three-point field goals made (2.2), 11th in overall field goal percentage (.441, 71 of 161) and 19th in scoring.

Bravo-Harriott and the No. 7 seed Rockets (18-12) will continue MAC Tournament play Wednesday, March 11, when they battle No. 6 seed Eastern Michigan (19-11) in the second round at approximately 2:30 p.m. in Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
