Hundreds of submissions were received in response to a call extended in January to undergraduate, graduate and post-baccalaureate students enrolled at the University in all disciplines.
The artworks selected for inclusion in the exhibition testify to the rich talents and diverse visions of UT students working across a broad range of media, according to Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, lecturer in the Art Department and gallery director.
“The juror process is different each time this exhibition is held since each year the juror comes from different states, institutions and professional backgrounds,” she said.
Toledo native David Knight, director of exhibitions and collections and part-time faculty member at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, is the guest juror.
He will visit the Center for the Visual Arts to talk about his experience with juried exhibitions Thursday, March 31, at 12:15 p.m. in the Haigh Auditorium.
Knight also will present awards during a closing reception Friday, April 1, at 6 p.m. in the Center for the Visual Arts Gallery.
This year the selection of works for inclusion in the exhibition was determined by votes cast by 15 Department of Art faculty who reviewed each submission.
“When selecting works for inclusion in an exhibition and for awards, jurors often base decisions on a combination of factors, including aesthetic quality related to entries by peers; craftsmanship; integration of the artwork’s concept with formal choices; and indication of promising potential for a professional art career,” Gilbertson said.
Students in Gilbertson’s Gallery Practices course assisted with all aspects of the exhibition: receiving submitted artworks, preparing all submissions for voting, making decisions about the placement of the selected works, and assisting with the installation of the exhibit.
“The exhibition is a great professional development opportunity for student artists, offering them experiences with the process of preparing artwork for gallery display and familiarizing them with the process of a juried exhibition,” Gilbertson said.
“We are thrilled to have Mr. Knight visit to see the exceptional work of our students, including the work of the Gallery Practices students who assisted with all aspects of realizing the exhibition,” she added.
The UT Department of Art Annual Juried Student Exhibition can be seen Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, April 1.
