Students from the American Language Institute will hold a book donation drive to benefit children in the developing world and raise awareness for literacy in poverty-stricken countries.

Room to ReadSherris Anne Schwind’s class will hold the event, weather permitting, Thursday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in front of the Snyder Memorial Building.

There will be a DJ, dance party and hot dogs for a minimum $1 donation.

Schwind, UT English as a second language specialist, and the American Language Institute students will collect books and cash donations for Room to Read, a nonprofit organization that is working to eradicate illiteracy, support girls to complete secondary school, and develop a habit of reading among children by collaborating with local authorities throughout Africa and Asia.

“I like working on Community Engagement Projects because I like helping people and improving the way they may think about issues,” said Bander AlAmoudi, an advanced student in the American Language Institute.

According to the Room to Read website, more than seven million children have benefited from its programs during the past 10 years.
