The University of Toledo Women’s Basketball Program received good news Tuesday when senior Naama Shafir was granted a medical hardship waiver from the Mid-American Conference.

Shafir will return to the Rockets for the 2012-13 season as she will have one season of competition remaining before her five-year eligibility clock expires.

The three-time All-MAC selection was lost for the 2011-12 season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during UT’s 69-58 win at Big Ten member Indiana Nov. 25.

Shafir, who had started 106 consecutive games prior to the injury, is averaging 13.7 points, 5.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 30.3 minutes per game in her UT career.

The native of Hoshaya, Israel, currently sits fourth in UT annals in helpers (569), fifth in free throws made (441), eighth in scoring average and free-throw percentage (76.8 percent, 441 of 574) and 10th in points (1,452), steals (168) and minutes played (3,210).

Despite losing Shafir to the injury, the Rockets finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 24-10 overall record and claimed a share of a third consecutive MAC West Division crown with a 13-3 league ledger. UT also earned its third straight appearance in the WNIT, advancing to the Sweet 16.

Shafir is expected to be one of 11 letterwinners returning to the Midnight Blue and Gold for the 2012-13 campaign, to go along with two freshmen who sat out last season as redshirts and three newcomers who signed letters of intent in November.
