Citing a need to keep moving the institution forward despite upcoming personnel departures, UT President Lloyd Jacobs has asked two members of his senior leadership team to temporarily oversee the Office of the Main Campus Provost and to serve as executive director of The University of Toledo Medical Center.

Dr. William McMillen will assume the role of interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs while maintaining his duties as vice president for government relations and chief of staff. McMillen served as a faculty member and administrator at Bowling Green State University before joining the Medical College of Ohio. He earned his PhD in English from Ohio University in 1976.

Dr. Scott Scarborough will become interim vice president and executive director of UT Medical Center. He will continue to serve as senior vice president for finance and administration. Scarborough joined UT in 2007 from DePaul University. The certified public accountant holds an accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin, an MBA from the University of Texas at Tyler, and a PhD in strategic management from the University of Texas at Arlington.

“Bill and Scott will provide leadership to these key areas during a time of transition, ensuring stability and continuity but also making certain this University doesn’t lose any of the ground we have gained over the past several years,” Jacobs said.

The president said a great deal had been accomplished during the tenures of Dr. Rosemary Haggett and Mark Chastang and it was important to not let that momentum slow. Haggett recently accepted a position at the University of North Texas System, and Chastang accepted a position at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Jacobs also said that the University should expect more changes in the weeks and months ahead as the president adjusts the structure of his senior leadership team.

“We’re facing a potentially very difficult budget in fiscal year 2012, we’re recalibrating our institutional strategic plan, and we’re preparing for our institutional accreditation visit in 2012,” Jacobs said. “It is important that this University is prepared not just to survive in this challenging environment, but to move forward and thrive in it.”

Jacobs said formal search process procedures would begin over the next few months.
