Men’s Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Team Honors

The Toledo men’s tennis team earned All-Academic accolades while four Rockets were recognized as Division I Men’s Scholar-Athletes for the 2021-22 season, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced.

Vlad Meluta, Max Skaer, Pawit Sornlaksup and Cole Shoults were recognized as scholar-athletes. The men’s tennis team also was honored as an All-Academic team after posting a cumulative GPA of 3.576.

For an individual to earn Scholar-Athlete status, one must meet the following requirements:

•  Have a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year; and

•  Be listed on the institution eligibility form.

For a team to earn All-Academic honors, a program must meet the following requirements:

•  Have a team GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale;

•  All student-athletes should be listed on the institution eligibility form; and

•  All varsity letterwinners should be factored into the cumulative GPA for the current academic year.

Meluta is a nursing major and has a 3.833 GPA. He went 7-6 in doubles and 1-5 in singles, a majority of his competition was during the fall season.

Skaer posted a 3.813 GPA and is majoring in accounting. He produced 1-2 singles and 0-2 doubles records during the Rocket Invitational (Sept. 24-26) before becoming a medical redshirt for the remainder of the season.

Sornlaksup, who was the 2022 MAC Player of the Year, is a University Studies major and maintained a 3.934 GPA this year. Sornlaksup is the No. 17 ITA Midwest Regions singles player and No. 8 ITA Midwest Region doubles team with Marko Galic, and was named first-team All-MAC and on the MAC All-Tournament Team. He led the Rockets with a 22-2 singles record, was 10-0 vs MAC opponents from the No. 1 court, ended the season on a 22-match win streak and earned MAC Player/ Doubles Team of the Week on six occasions.

The MAC Jack Verdevelt Sportsmanship Award winner, Shoults graduated with a degree in biology in May with a 3.774 GPA. He also was one of two Rockets to earn a spot on the Academic All-MAC team this season. Shoults clinched the match point for Toledo in the 4-3 victory over Illinois State (Feb. 19), won the Flight 6 Singles of the 2021 MAC Indoors tournament and went 0-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles during the MAC Tournament.
