Head Men’s Golf Coach Jamie Broce came up three strokes shy of making the cut on Friday at the 2014 PGA Championship.

“It was a great experience to be competing against all the world’s top golfers,” Broce said. “It took a while for me to get my feet under me, and I really started to get comfortable and enjoy the atmosphere in today’s round. The course was extremely long, and you had to string great shots together to score well. There was no margin for error, and that’s what you expect in a major championship.”
After registering double bogeys on his first two holes Thursday, Broce played his final 34 holes at even-par. He tied for 95th place in the overall standings and was tied for third place out of 20 club professionals that were competing in the tourney.
Broce teed off Friday on the back nine and was two-over in his round before notching birdies at the No. 18 (par-5, 542 yards), No. 2 (par-5, 500 yards) and No. 3 (par-3, 205 yards) holes. That hot stretch moved him to one-under for the day and two-over for the tournament.
“I was pumped and ready to go after getting to two-over,” Broce said. “I thought I was going to get a couple more and make a run at the cut mark because I was driving the ball so well.”
A bogey on No. 4 (par-4, 372 yards) ended Broce’s run though. He then bogeyed No. 6 (par-4, 495 yards) before settling for pars the rest of the way.
“I missed my only fairway of the day on No. 4 and ended up with a bad lie in the rough,” Broce said. “It was tough to get out of, and I lost some momentum. On No. 6, I hit a perfect drive and was 220 from the pin but I ended up missing an eight-footer for bogey.”
Broce qualified for the PGA Championship by posting a runner-up showing at the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship in July in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
He has guided Toledo to second- and third-place finishes at the Mid-American Conference Championship the past two seasons and will be entering his third year at the helm of the Rocket men’s golf program this fall.
