A University of Toledo graduate has been selected to sing the national anthem at a Detroit Tigers’ game at Comerica Park this month.

Originally from Leipsic, Ohio, Scott Knueven graduated from the University in May with a bachelor’s degree in music education. He has sung the national anthem at UT’s commencement ceremony three times, but said this will be the largest crowd to hear his version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“I love that I get this opportunity to sing in front of so many people,” Knueven said.

“Scott has a fine tenor voice, which commands the attention of all who hear him,” said Barbara Rondelli Perry, recently retired UT professor of music, who was Knueven’s voice instructor for four years.

“Scott was very excited about the number of people who would get to see him perform at the game, and this will also provide nice regional exposure for the Music Department and the University. It really gets The University of Toledo’s name out there,” she added.

Knueven has been singing since his freshman year of high school.

“I first started singing for an art credit, and then I just started really liking it,” he said.

At UT, Knueven was a member of several musical groups, including the Men’s Chorus, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the Concert Chorale and the Opera Workshop. He also performed with his fraternity at a UT basketball game and at Songfest 2010.

Since graduation, Knueven has worked at his family’s dairy farm. In the fall, he will begin pursuing a master’s degree in vocal performance at Bowling Green State University.

Knueven will sing the national anthem at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Comerica Park in Detroit before the Tigers take on the Cleveland Indians.

“Personally, I’m an Indians fan,” Knueven said. “But this is a great opportunity and if I have to root for the Tigers for one game, I will.”
