Toledo to host Inverness Intercollegiate Sept. 19-20

Toledo will host the 12th annual Inverness Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 19 and 20, at the renowned Inverness Club.

The ultra-competitive 54-hole tournament will be played on a par-71, 7,323-yard layout. The 54-hole event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. with 36 holes Monday and a tee time start of 8 a.m. with 18 holes Tuesday.

UT will entertain a 13-team field that includes Auburn, Austin Peay, Ball State, Bowling Green, Duke, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Penn State, Saint Mary’s (Calif.) and Virginia.

The Rockets’ lineup at Inverness will include freshman Thomas Thurloway, junior Stephen Watts, junior Colin Joseph and freshman Joe Bryce. The fifth and final spot has yet to be determined. Thurloway currently leads the team with a 72.4 stroke average, followed by Watts (73.0), Joseph (75.0), sophomore Jamie Knipe (76.8) and sophomore Spencer Shoemaker (77.2). UT will be paired with Auburn and Michigan State during Monday’s opening two rounds.

Toledo is coming off a seventh-place finish at the rain-shortened Wolf Run Intercollegiate Sept. 10-11. The event was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but was adjusted to 36 after well over an inch of rain fell Friday night and early Saturday morning. The Rockets fired a team score of 35-over par 603 (296-307) to finish seventh among 14 squads.

Thurloway paced the midnight blue and gold at three-over par 145 (70-75) and tied for 14th place in his second collegiate event. Joseph finished four strokes behind Thurloway and tied for 29th place at seven-over par 149 (72-77), while Watts finished tied for the 37th spot at eight-over par 150 (76-74). Rounding out Toledo’s lineup were Knipe, who shot 18-over par 160 (78-82) to tie for 66th place, and Shoemaker who posted a score of 19-over par 161 (80-81) to tie for the 68th spot, respectively.

Last fall, Toledo finished in 10th place at the Inverness Intercollegiate. The Rockets posted a team score of 55-over par 907 (306-298-303) to finish second among five Mid-American Conference teams.

Pac-12 Conference member California secured the team title at 25-over par 877 (291-293-293) and held a three-stroke cushion over 2014 team champion East Tennessee State at 28-over par 586 (293-293-294).
