UToledo Names New Human Resources Leaders to Focus on Modernization of HR and Talent Recruitment and Retention

UToledo has announced a renewed prioritization on talent recruitment and retention, as well as professional development of future leaders. The University has named new leadership of to the Human Resources Department to lead the initiative focused on modernization along with recruiting talent and building teams.

John Elliott will serve as senior associate vice president and chief human resources officer effective Oct. 5. Elliott, who has spent much of his career in healthcare, academic medical centers and higher education, joins UToledo from SCL Health in Billings, Mont. where he was vice president of human resources.

“As an institution, our people are our greatest asset. As such, Human Resources (HR) plays a critical and essential role within the University. HR is a resource for our employees, managers and senior leaders. Their work touches all campuses, departments, clinics, and business units,” said Matt Schroeder, executive vice president for finance and administration and CFO.

Elliott also has held human resources leadership positions at University of Louisville in Kentucky, Dartmouth-Hitchcock in New Hampshire, WakeMed Health and Hospitals in North Carolina and Baptist Health in Alabama.

He has a M.B.A. from Troy State University and a bachelor’s degree in international business and finance from the State University of New York.

Dr. Melissa Hurst also is joining the human resources team as executive director of talent strategy and development. An experienced organizational strategy and executive consultant, Hurst will assist with recruiting key leaders to the University to fill vacant and interim positions.

Hurst’s professional experience in higher education includes personnel recruitment focused on hiring diverse talent and professional development at the University of Virginia and the University of South Carolina. She has a doctorate in educational psychology and research, master of education in higher education administration and bachelor of arts in journalism and mass communications from the University of South Carolina.
