Women’s golf team wins Rocket Classic

Junior Sathika Ruenreong captured her first collegiate title by winning a three-hole playoff and Toledo won its Rocket Classic for the second straight year at the Catawba Island Club.

Ruenreong (72-72-74) tied for first place with Western Michigan’s Kaitlyn Watkins (72-75-71) at two-over par 218. Both notched pars on No. 18 twice before Watkins registered a bogey on the third hole and Reunreong a par.

UT shot a team score of 39-over par 903 (302-297-304) to finish 12 strokes in front of the Broncos (301-307-307=915).

Rounding out the top five were fellow Mid-American Conference members Ohio (312-301-314=927), Bowling Green (308-306-322=936) and Akron (318-319-324=961).

“I’m very happy for Sathika because she’s been so close to winning a tournament,” Head Women’s Golf Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. “Both Sathika and Manisa [Isavas] were consistent throughout their 54 holes and played a big part in us winning the tournament.”
Junior Manisa Isavas finished in third place, three strokes behind the leaders at five-over par 221 (71-74-76).

Rounding out the Rockets’ lineup was senior Jennifer Elsholz tied for 10th place at 17-over par 233 (79-73-81), senior Stephanie St-Jean tied for 20th place at 21-over par 237 (80-81-76) and junior Morgan Salm tied for 27th place at 23-over par 239 (83-78-78). 



Freshman Napaphan Phongpaiboon competed as an individual and tied for 33rd place at 28-over par 244 (81-84-79).
