Opera star to visit UT to present master class, discuss career, music

Legendary opera star Marilyn Horne will visit The University of Toledo Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18 and 19, to take part in a public discussion of her career and life in music and to conduct a master class with vocal students.

Horne teaches vocalists around the world. She performed regularly for many years with the Metropolitan Opera and also appeared in major opera houses around the world: La Scala, Gelsenkirchen Opera, San Francisco Opera, Opera Company of Boston and the Royal Opera House.

She was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1995 and is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Her notable recordings include West Side Story, led by Leonard Bernstein, from 1984; Bizet’s Carmen in 1972, also conducted by Bernstein; Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice from 1970, conducted by Georg Solti; Puccini’s Suor Angelica in 1976, led by Lorin Maazel; and many Rossini operas.

The College of Communication and the Arts will present Horne Friday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in conversation with Dr. Denise Ritter Bernardini, UT assistant professor of music and director of the UT Opera Ensemble, in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall. A book signing will follow in the lobby.

Tickets are available for this event for $25 each through the Center for Performing Arts Box Office at utoledo.edu/boxoffice and by phone at 419.530.2375. Seating is limited; tickets are first-come, first-served.

The master class will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall. Featured singers will be Molly Bock, Lena Miller, and Sasha Noori from the UT Department of Music, and Meridian Prall of Homestead High School in Fort Wayne, Ind. UT vocalists Devon Desmond and Janaye Ashman will serve as alternates.

These events are presented by the Department of Music in the College of Communication and the Arts’ School of Visual and Performing Arts with sponsorship from the Office of the Provost and WGTE/KnowledgeStream.

Proceeds from these events will benefit the UT Opera Ensemble.
