Amanda Mure, a third-year medical student at The University of Toledo, is the recipient of the 2010 American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Leadership Award.

The Leadership Award is under the umbrella of the Excellence in Medicine Awards of the AMA Foundation, and is based on the recipient’s ability to demonstrate outstanding leadership in the areas of advocacy, community service, public health and education, said Dina Lindenberg, program officer for the AMA Foundation.
Mure worked in free clinics in Latin America, planned a migrant worker public health conference, and is helping to expand a free clinic offered to the Hispanic community in the Toledo area.
Medical students have so many opportunities to improve the community in which they live, whether it is volunteering at the Community Care Clinic or Mobile Migrant Camp Clinic, Mure said.
“I really believe I’m accepting this award on behalf of the UT College of Medicine. None of our education, philanthropy and leadership experiences would be possible without such a supporting administration,” she said.
Mure is featured on the AMA Foundation posters that will be distributed to medical schools across the country and has become a “poster child” for the organization, Lindenberg said.
“This award is very well-deserved as Ms. Mure has extraordinary leadership abilities,” said Dr. Patricia Metting, associate dean of the UT College of Medicine. “The fact that this is being recognized nationally does well for the University as well.”
The AMA Foundation is accepting nominations and applications for the 2011 Excellence in Medicine Awards; submissions are due Wednesday, Nov. 17.
