Two University of Toledo engineering professors provide important leadership to a national organization in their field.Dr. Glenn Lipscomb, professor and chair of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, and Dr. Isabel Escobar, professor of chemical and environmental engineering and interim assistant dean of research development and outreach in the College of Engineering, are active members of the North American Membrane Society (NAMS).
“The North American Membrane Society is the only professional society in North America aimed at promoting all aspects of membrane science and technology,” Lipscomb said. “This ranges from fundamental studies of membrane material science to process application and development.”
Escobar, who serves on the NAMS Board of Directors, was chair of this year’s 20th annual society meeting in Washington, D.C. And Lipscomb, who is the NAMS secretary, is the co-chair of the upcoming 2011 NAMS meeting that will be held in Las Vegas.“I attended my first NAMS meeting in 2001 and immediately became thrilled with the amount of focus the organization places on students,” Escobar said. “I knew from that point that I wanted to be involved with such a wonderful group of professionals.”
Some of the fundamental studies of NAMS include membrane chemistry, formation, characterization, transport, fouling with applications ranging from production of nitrogen from air, carbon dioxide capture, seawater desalination for drinking water production, purification of therapeutic proteins, fueling cell membranes, and alternative energy production.
“Leadership in NAMS clearly affirms not only what Drs. Escobar and Lipscomb have accomplished in their laboratories and classrooms, it speaks for the high esteem in which they are held by their peers,” said Dr. Nagi Naganathan, dean of the College of Engineering. “They are great ambassadors for UT, and their leadership roles serve as pillars supporting our vision to be prominent nationally and internationally.”
