World-renowned vascular surgeon to speak at UT commencement

Dr. James Stanley, Handleman Professor of Surgery and director of the Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan Medical Center, will speak at The University of Toledo’s commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. in Savage Arena.

In the event severe winter weather requires commencement to be postponed, the ceremony would take place Monday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m. in Savage Arena.

There are 2,115 candidates for degrees from the summer and fall semesters spanning the colleges on Main and Health Sciences campuses. There are 693 candidates for doctoral, education specialist and master’s degrees, and 1,422 candidates for bachelor’s and associate degrees.

An honorary doctorate of science will be awarded to Stanley at the ceremony, which will be broadcast live via the web at http://video.utoledo.edu.

Stanley’s vascular surgery reputation draws patients from around the globe. He’s dedicated time to teaching and has received millions of dollars in research grants over the course of his career.

He has been a member of the University Musical Society at Michigan since 2003 and has lived in Ann Arbor since he arrived there to start his undergraduate studies in 1956.

Awarded the first Conrad Jobst Award for Research in Vascular Surgery in 1972, Stanley also received the University of Michigan Distinguished Service Award in 1976 and the Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society Distinguished Achievement Award in 2000. According to his UM Department of Surgery biography, he is an honorary Fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons, an honorary member of the National Academy of Medicine of Columbia and an honorary member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons’ Section of Vascular Surgery.

He is a member of 30 scientific societies and the author of more than 300 scientific articles and 180 chapters in surgical textbooks.

In addition, Stanley is a fan of classical and jazz music, an avid lepidopterist (an examiner of butterflies and moths), an enthusiastic Snipe sailor and a novice marathoner.

Stanley’s motto of “Keep learning, take risks and don’t fear failure” has served him well since his early days as a paperboy in Lansing, Mich.
