The University of Toledo Police Department is thanking members of the campus community for their vigilance for reporting an incident that turned out to be innocuous.

Rumors stemming from a police detective speaking in a criminal justice class sparked short-term concerns that someone with a gun was on campus.

“The detective was armed, which is normal for law enforcement officers,” UT Police Chief Jeff Newton said. “Whenever people see something unusual on campus, please report it to campus police right away. While this case turned out to be no cause for alarm, it is better to err on the side of safety, and I want to thank those who reported what they saw.”

UT Police can be contacted at 419.530.2600, and Newton urged all members of the UT community to follow UTPD on Facebook.
