The Legal Specialties Division of the Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Service at The University of Toledo this week will host the oral arguments of the Sixth District Court of Appeals.
UT and high school students will be able to witness firsthand oral arguments and meet with the panel of judges beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the McQuade Courtroom in the Health and Human Services Building.
“We are very appreciative of the court’s willingness to hear the arguments at UT in order to facilitate accessibility to high school and college students in terms of location and courtroom space,” said John Schlageter, associate lecturer in the Department of School Psychology, Legal Specialties and Counselor Education. “The arguments on campus are a way to bring the law to the local community.”
The appellate arguments that will be presented pertain to a criminal case out of Fulton County and two civil cases out of Sandusky and Huron counties.
The Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals handles appeals from cases arising in Courts of Common Pleas from Erie, Fulton, Huron, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, Williams and Wood counties.
This year’s panel includes Judge Mark L. Pietrykowski, Judge Arlene Singer and Judge Stephen A. Yarbrough. After the oral arguments have been heard, there will be a question-and-answer portion in which students can ask the judges questions. Live stream coverage will be available in the multipurpose room.
