Early Monday morning, University of Toledo Police responded to a call that a male student had instigated a series of incidents in the Academic House.
According to eyewitness reports, the man pushed past a student working at the front desk and then created a second altercation that left several students attempting to hold the man down as police responded.
UT officials said the investigation was ongoing, but believe illegal drugs may have been a factor in the student’s behavior.
“We’re still investigating the cause of the behavior that drove this student to fight with fellow students, police officers and even paramedics on the scene,” said UT Police Chief Jeff Newton.
“The first UT police officer was on the scene within minutes and immediately called for backup to minimize the chances of the incident affecting other students in Academic House,” Newton said.
Several UT police officers were treated for non-life threatening injuries resulting from efforts to restrain the man, who is facing several assault-related charges.
Newton encouraged all members of the University community to contact the UT Police Department immediately at 419.530.2600 if they see something out of the ordinary or to call 911 in the case of an emergency.
