A University of Toledo professor of art is being recognized by the Arts Commission with a merit award for outstanding accomplishments in multidisciplinary art.
A multimedia artist, designer and musician, Barry Whittaker is a professor in the Department of Art whose work explores themes of mythology, language, miscommunication and cultural hybridization through technology and collaboration.

“I’m sincerely grateful to the Arts Commission for recognizing my work with the Merit Award,” he said. “It’s an honor to be included among so many talented artists in Toledo. The Arts Commission’s ongoing support for individual artists plays a vital role in making Toledo a place where experimentation, risk-taking and creative growth are possible. I’m deeply appreciative of the dedicated staff, volunteers and jurors whose behind-the-scenes work has a visible and lasting impact on our arts community.
“This award will directly support my continued experimentation and the development of new projects, allowing me to push my work in new directions.”
Whittaker is one of three local artists to receive a merit award from the Arts Commission, with each award-winner receiving $4,000.
