At a pivotal point in its 150-year history, The University of Toledo is ready to innovate and evolve to make a positive impact in its next chapter, UToledo President Gregory Postel shared in his second State of the University Address.
“As we celebrate 150 years of serving students and our community, it also is time for us to look toward the future and envision how UToledo can seize the moment and make a positive impact in the next 150 years,” Postel said. “Our sesquicentennial is an important moment to reflect on our past and plan for our future.”
In his video address, UToledo President Gregory Postel talked about the importance of honoring the University’s traditions while remaining committed to being adaptable to meet the needs of the day.
In a video address from Doermann Theatre inside University Hall, the first building on Main Campus that remains an iconic symbol of UToledo, Postel talked about the importance of honoring the University’s traditions while remaining committed to being adaptable to meet the needs of the day.
“Students on our campuses today in 2022 are very different than the first students at the Toledo University of Arts and Trades back in 1872,” he said. “It is our responsibility to prepare students for success in a changing world.”
A commitment to growing enrollment and supporting student success was a key focus of his address, noting the need for thoughtful and strategic investment to achieve the University’s mission. Postel also shared his commitment to supporting other key initiatives of diversity, equity and inclusion, healthcare, research and community engagement.
The President recognized employees of The University of Toledo Medical Center for caring for our community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty researchers for contributing to an 18.3% increase in external research funding last year and serving as leaders in their academic disciplines, and students for achieving success in the classroom, research labs and on the basketball court.
Postel concluded his address by welcoming new leaders to campus, including two new vice presidents to lead diversity, equity and inclusion and intercollegiate athletics, and a commitment to campus being a hub for community engagement and connection.
“Thank you for the opportunity today to reflect on the history of this amazing University and the endless possibilities for our future chapters,” he said. “The University of Toledo is a sum of its parts and our people are our greatest asset. Thank you for all that you have done and will do to ensure UToledo is living up to our legacy as a leader in education, healthcare and community engagement.”
