Student Veterans of America, Boy Scout Troop 9615 and the Military Service Center will be conducting a flag retirement ceremony on Tuesday, April 12, in Centennial Mall.

The purpose of this event is to educate people on the history of the flag and the proper way to dispose of a flag that is no longer suitable for display, and to preside over the retirement of more than 500 American flags.

“This is the first flag retirement ceremony we’ve had in two-plus years because of COVID-19,” said Kyle Jakob, president of the UToledo chapter of Student Veterans of America and a communication studies student graduating in May.

“We will be retiring these American flags through the traditional ceremony that honors both the flag and what it represents — the men and women who volunteered to serve our country and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in duty of that service.”

The UToledo community is invited to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

“The Military Service Center is excited to partner with Boy Scout Troop 9615 and the UToledo campus Student Veterans of America on this flag retirement ceremony,” said Eric Buetikofer, director of military and veteran affairs. “Partnerships for ceremonies such as this are important in that they provide a way for our military veterans to demonstrate and impart a sense of good citizenship and respect for one of our nation’s greatest symbols to younger generations such as the Boy Scouts. This is a great way for the greater UToledo community to come together, pay respect to the American flag and witness a flag retirement ceremony.”

Flags to be retired can be dropped off at the Military Service Center in Rocket Hall Room 1350 or Camp Miakonda, 5600 W. Sylvania Ave. in Toledo.
