UTMC discontinues University Health Services, redistributes treatments throughout clinics

UT Medical Center officials are re-engineering the model for care to students and employees on Health Science Campus. The creative solution has come about as a result of the need to reduce costs and enhance services.

University Health Services, the student and employee health clinic located in Dowling Hall Room 2424, will close Thursday, April 14, and its services will be distributed to clinics and care providers throughout the hospital.

“We remain committed to providing rapid, on-campus acute care and other services to UT students and employees on Health Science Campus, but we think we can provide better service more efficiently by incorporating these visits into our existing infrastructure,” said Dr. Scott Scarborough, senior vice president and executive director of UT Medical Center.

In some cases, UTMC will utilize technology to reduce the need for clinical visits, Scarborough said, highlighting the move of students’ immunization records online, which will be accessible through myUT.

For many services offered by University Health Services, students and employees will be redirected to the Family Medicine Clinic at the Ruppert Health Center or to the Emergency Department after hours. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 419.383.5555.

Students and employees who experience occupation injuries or exposures will be directed to the Emergency Department.

Plans for two services performed by University Health Services — student behavior health services and occupational medicine services — are still being finalized and will be announced shortly, Scarborough said.

The closure will eliminate six positions. Scarborough said the University would work to find openings for those affected in other parts of the University, enroll them in the UT Works Program, and assist with outplacement services.

“This was a difficult decision, but after examining our options, we are confident that we can continue to offer these services to employees and students using our existing clinical infrastructure,” Scarborough said.
