As the warm weather returns and you dust off a pair running shoes or get back to playing, it’s important to ease your body into a workout routine to avoid an injury.

In this new episode of Prescribed Listening, host Chrissy Billau discusses how to adjust back into a workout routine after a hiatus with Dr. David Sohn, a sports medicine and orthopaedic surgeon.

“For people who are transitioning from no activity to activity, those are the people who are likely going to have things like shin splints or they’re going to have knee pain,” Sohn said. “And so, none of these things are dangerous, but gradually returning to sports and increasing your activity level will help.”

Some of the tips he recommends in the episode include how to increase your activity level and planning times for stretching to avoid tightness. Sohn also offers tips for students returning to school sports, for adults getting started running and when it’s time to talk to a doctor about a pain you’re having.

“If you actually feel something pop, a moment where you’re like, ‘This is the moment it happened. I was throwing a ball and “pop,” ’ or ‘I was sprinting and then I felt “pop,” ’ or ‘I was wrestling, the guy twisted my knee, I felt a “pop,” ’ … that’s something that should be evaluated,” Sohn said.

You can schedule an appointment with Sohn through the UTMC Orthopaedic Center at 419.383.4878.
