Teaching webinar slated for Aug. 19

The University Teaching Center is sponsoring a one-hour, web-based seminar titled “Using Brief Interventions to Maximize Student Learning” Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m. in Memorial Field House Room 2910.

The speaker will be Dr. James Lange, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption College and author of a monthly column on teaching tips in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Lang will show attendees how to:

• Prompt students to predict outcomes and solutions to lectures;

• Encourage students to self-explain when they are solving problems;

• Incorporate frequent opportunities for students to retrieve course content from memory;

• Ask students to generate their own meanings of course material; and

• Help students create connections between course materials and the world beyond the classroom.

After the presentation, David Strukel, UT associate lecturer in the Department of Communication, will lead a discussion on the seminar’s content.

Strukel is one of the winners of the Rising Star Awards from the Office of the Provost. He devised a public presentation class for students using the Apple iPad, MacBook Air and iTunes U.
