The Pi Kappa Alpha Annual Fireman’s Challenge will take place Saturday, Sept. 3, at noon at The University of Toledo in parking area 6 east of the Health Education Building on Main Campus.

This is a philanthropic event that was created to raise funds and awareness for the Toledo Fire & Rescue Foundation.

Students competed in the fire truck pull during Pi Kappa Alpha Fireman’s Challenge last year.

Jason Wanamaker, student and member of Pi Kappa Alpha, is planning the fundraiser this year.

“This event started here at The University of Toledo in fall of 2014, and each year it has been growing,” Wanamaker said.

Activities will include the fire truck pull, bucket brigade, uniform relay and a tug-of-war contest.

The proceeds from this event go directly to the families of local firemen who have recently lost their loved ones.

“Last year the Fireman’s Challenge raised about $1,500, and we had over 250 students and community members take part in this event,” Wanamaker said. “This year we are hoping to do even better.”

“We think that this is a great idea,” Toledo Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said. “It is an opportunity for us to immerse ourselves in the community in a different way, in other words, not in the scene of an emergency.”

Throughout the week starting Aug 29, Pi Kappa Alpha will hold different fundraisers leading up to the Fireman’s Challenge. There will be Pie-a-Pike, powder-puff football, dunk-a-pike and more near the Student Union.

“We hope this year to get even more community and campus involvement from the Toledo area and campus,” Wanamaker said.

If it rains, the Fireman’s Challenge will be held in the Health Education Building Auxiliary Gym.

To register for the event as an individual or as a team, go to eventbrite.com and search Pi Kappa Alpha Fireman’s Challenge. The cost to register is $8.58.
