Get ready to hang loose! The 10th annual President’s Backyard Barbecue will bring a taste of the island life to Centennial Mall Thursday, Sept. 1, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to the luau, which will feature a pig roast, teriyaki pulled beef, pulled chicken marinated in island spices, coconut rice, chips and vegan sandwiches. Mocktails, including berry daiquiris and margaritas, will be served, along with water and snow cones.

How low can you go? Find out at the limbo competition! Or rock a grass skirt and take part in the hula contest. There’ll be inflatable games, a rock wall and pedal cars, as well as air brush tattoos and caricature artists.

Giveaways will include leis, grass skirts, sunglasses, pineapple cups, T-shirts and selfie sticks.

The Office of the President and the Division of Student Affairs sponsor this annual event.

“Students and employees are invited to come out and have some fun on our own piece of paradise,” Dr. Phillip “Flapp” Cockrell, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said. “Celebrate the start of the semester, wear your midnight blue and gold for Rocket Thursdays, and have a good time with some good food and good friends.”

If a tropical depression affects the weather, the event will take place in the Student Union Auditorium.
