Former Toledo mayor to speak Oct. 17

Jack Ford will talk about the importance of being involved in the community Thursday, Oct. 17.

The UT adjunct professor of Africana studies and former Toledo mayor will speak at 12:30 p.m. in Student Union Room 3016.

“A Conversation on Civil Participation” is the title of his talk.

“Mr. Ford will reflect on his decades-long civic engagement to provide insight from which others might benefit,” said Dr. Rubin Patterson, professor and chair of sociology and anthropology, and director of the Africana Studies Program and the Institute for the Study and Economic Engagement of Southern Africa. “It is impossible for someone to work as a high-level public servant for years and found and run important social service nonprofits the way Mr. Ford has done and not have some memorable pearls of wisdom to share concerning civic engagement.

“Students are fortunate to have access to Mr. Ford as an adjunct professor of Africana studies each semester,” Patterson added.

Ford’s talk is part of the Sojourner’s Truth and Africana Studies Brown-Bag Seminar Series.
