In celebration of The University of Toledo’s Presidential Inauguration of Dr. James Holloway on Thursday, Oct. 16, the Office of Student Engagement and Connections (OSEC) is partnering with Bridge UToledo and 1Matters for a two-day service initiative supporting Toledo’s homeless community, and student volunteers are needed.
The initiative, which highlights UToledo’s ongoing commitment to service and community engagement, begins Friday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Thompson Student Union Ingman Room, where Rockets will package 400 lunches for individuals facing food insecurity.
On Saturday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., UToledo volunteers will join Tent City, a weekend event providing meals, clothing, hygiene products and medical care to those in need. Bridge UToledo will also lead the Kids’ Tent, offering games, crafts and snacks for families.
Registration and volunteer sign-ups are available through InvoNet.
“While we value the nourishment the PB&J sandwiches, cookies and chips provide, the relationships we build during Saturday’s handouts are equally important,” said Jayden Chacko, Bridge UToledo president. “Even small gestures can bring encouragement and joy.”
Bridge UToledo has grown to more than 200 active members, with a goal to increase the number of lunches served at Tent City from 200 to 500 this year. OSEC will provide free T-shirts for student volunteers and transportation is available.
