The College of Medicine Research Advisory Council will host Dr. John Mekalanos, professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, as well as chair of the Microbiology and Immunobiology Department at Harvard Medical School, as part of the University Distinguished Lecture Series.

Mekalanos will deliver a lecture titled “Understanding Bacterial Secretion Machines Through Defining Their Effector Functions.”
He has spent more than three decades studying bacterial pathogenesis. His research has uncovered the importance of accessory genetic elements in the evolutionary emergence of bacterial pathogens.
In 2006, his group discovered the function of the Type VI secretion system in several human pathogens and has rapidly defined genetic, regulatory, cell biological, biochemical, pathobiological and structural aspects of these dynamic organelles.
Mekalanos is known worldwide as the leader in bacterial pathogenesis and has received many awards and honors. Most notably, in 1998, he was elected to serve as member of the National Academy of Sciences.
