<\/a>Lois Lipman posed for a photo with the Television Internet and Video Association Peer Gold Award she received for her documentary, \u201cA Place to Belong.\u201d<\/p><\/div>An accomplished documentary filmmaker, Lois Lipman has received honors for a piece about understanding boys with Asperger\u2019s syndrome, which is an autism spectrum disorder.<\/p>\n
Lipman, a part-time faculty member in The University of Toledo\u2019s Department of Theatre and Film, recently received the Television Internet and Video Association Peer Gold Award for Best Student Non-Dramatic Documentary. The Peer Awards are judged by industry professionals who choose the most skilled and innovative individuals of the production community. <\/p>\n
\u201cI felt so fortunate to have been recognized among my peers,\u201d Lipman said. <\/p>\n
Her documentary was part of a thesis film she created while attending American University in Washington, D.C., for her master of fine arts degree. The documentary, \u201cA Place to Belong: Aspergers and a School,\u201d is about two 11-year-old boys who were bullied and never fully understood by teachers. The film follows the boys to a different school created for those who have Asperger\u2019s syndrome to allow them to be taught in a safe place and learn self-confidence and communication. With the help of the school, the boys find acceptance. <\/p>\n
Lipman produced and co-directed the film, as well as served as a camera operator. \u201cA Place to Belong\u201d also received Best Documentary and Best Edited Film recognition at American University\u2019s Film Festival and a CINE Golden Eagle for Student Documentary. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a privilege to select something interesting and go into a new community,\u201d Lipman said. \u201cYou become touched, changed, and you get to know another world.\u201d<\/p>\n
She shares her experiences at UT teaching part-time documentary production. Her goal is for students to be able to tell stories of strong characters that others can connect with.<\/p>\n
Lipman has been involved in documentary production for 12 years and has worked on documentaries for the BBC and \u201c60 Minutes\u201d in London.<\/p>\n
During her work for \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d she developed more than 20 films around the world on topics that included environmental issues and sustainability, as well as inspirational stories. She received an Emmy for Best Documentary for a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d piece about BBC Radio called \u201cThe Beeb.\u201d <\/p>\n
Lipman also has received the distinguished Peabody Award for \u201cFrom Harlem to the Barcelona Opera House \u2014 Arthur Mitchell and Dance Theater Harlem\u201d and the American Women in Radio and Television Best Documentary for the film \u201c \u2019Till Death Do Us Part\u201d about dowry deaths in India.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
