The University of Toledo will host a visiting human rights expert to explore the profound transformation underway across the Middle East in the Maryse and Ramzy Mikhail Memorial Lecture on Friday, Nov. 6.<\/p>\n

Dr. Asli \u00dc. B\u00e2li of Yale University will present \u201cPower Without Order: Gaza, Iran and the Remaking of the Middle East\u201d at 5 p.m. in the Law Center\u2019s McQuade Law Auditorium.<\/p>\n

Dr. Asli \u00dc. B\u00e2li is the Howard M. Holtzmann Professor of Law at Yale Law School, where she co-directs the Orville H. Schell Jr. Center for International Human Rights and the Abdallah S. Kamel Center for the Study of Islamic Law and Civilization.<\/p><\/div>\n

B\u00e2li is the Howard M. Holtzmann Professor of Law at Yale Law School, where she co-directs the Orville H. Schell Jr. Center for International Human Rights and the Abdallah S. Kamel Center for the Study of Islamic Law and Civilization. She previously served as the founding faculty director of the Promise Institute for Human Rights and director of the Center for Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is a past president of the Middle East Studies Association and co-chair of the Advisory Board for the Middle East Division of Human Rights Watch.<\/p>\n

B\u00e2li is widely published in leading law journals and peer-reviewed social science journals and is co-editor of two volumes on comparative law published by Cambridge University Press.<\/p>\n

In her free, public lecture at UToledo, B\u00e2li will explore a profound reordering taking place in the Middle East, asking what the region\u2019s transformation means for Palestinian self-determination, regional security and nuclear proliferation in a region whose old organizing assumptions are rapidly coming apart.<\/p>\n

The Maryse and Ramzy Mikhail Memorial Lecture is sponsored by the Judith Herb College of Arts, Social Sciences and Education and the Mikhail Endowment Fund, which honors the work and contributions of Maryse Mikhail by supporting an annual lecture dealing with Arab culture, history, politics, economics and other aspects of life in the Middle East, including issues of peace and justice.<\/p>\n
