{"id":1274,"date":"2009-04-02T05:21:24","date_gmt":"2009-04-02T10:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=1274"},"modified":"2009-04-02T07:45:25","modified_gmt":"2009-04-02T12:45:25","slug":"events-planned-for-10-hours-of-astronomy-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_02_2009\/events-planned-for-10-hours-of-astronomy-celebration","title":{"rendered":"Events planned for 100 Hours of Astronomy celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/logo_iya.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1275\" title=\"logo_iya\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/logo_iya.jpg\" alt=\"logo_iya\" width=\"150\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a>To mark the 400th anniversary of the year Galileo used a telescope to study the sky, The University of Toledo Department of Physics and Astronomy will participate in the international 100 Hours of Astronomy celebration.<\/p>\n<p>The celebration is part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, a global effort started by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO to help people rediscover their place in the universe.<\/p>\n<p>Events slated at UT will be:<br \/>\n<strong>Thursday, April 2<\/strong><br \/>\n7:30 p.m. \u2014 Talk by Dr. Reva-Kay Williams, UT visiting assistant professor of physics, about \u201cAstrophysical Black Holes and Energy Extraction\u201d in the Ritter Observatory on Main Campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday, April 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7:30 p.m. \u2014 Regular Planetarium program, \u201cThe Spring Skies Over Toledo,\u201d followed by a public observing at Ritter Observatory.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nSaturday, April 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>11 a.m. \u2014 Toddler Discovery Time: A live, interactive program developed by Meredith Gray-Fischer, UT community and technology specialist, designed for 2-, 3- and 4-year-old children.<\/p>\n<p>1 p.m. \u2014 Regular Ritter Planetarium program, \u201cField Trip to the Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2 p.m. \u2014 Solar observing with the new Sunspotter telescope.<\/p>\n<p>3 p.m. \u2014 Workshop on \u201cHow to Buy a Telescope\u201d presented by Planetarium Associate Director Alex Mak. Admission for this event will be $10.<\/p>\n<p>6:30 p.m. \u2014 Drs. S.T. Megeath and John-David Smith, UT astronomy faculty, will discuss their involvement with the new Herschel Space Observatory to be launched by the European Space Agency later this month. Their talk, \u201cBlastoff Into the Cold Universe: Observing the Origins of Stars and Galaxies With the Herschel Space Observatory,\u201d will look at how Herschel, the largest telescope mirror ever flown, will observe the universe in infrared from a vantage point of one million miles from Earth.
