In November, Va\u2019Shawn Robinson reported for work at UT Medical Center, where he is a member of the housekeeping staff. He had no idea he would be a hero that day.<\/p>\n

After a welcome reception for new physicians at UTMC, several employees were helping with the cleanup. Susan Arbaugh, who was snacking while she cleaned, began choking on a piece of food.<\/p>\n

Va\u2019Shawn Robinson held a certificate he received for his heroic actions and posed for a photo with, from left, Arlene Fell, director of environmental services, Susan Arbaugh and Norma Tomlinson, associate vice president and associate executive director for UT Medical Center.<\/p><\/div>\n

Robinson said he was standing nearby when he heard someone yell, \u201cOh my gosh.\u201d He turned around and saw Arbaugh waving her hands in panic.<\/p>\n

Robinson said he didn\u2019t know what was wrong until Arbaugh\u2019s color began to change due to loss of oxygen. Knowing there was no time to call for emergency personnel, he took action.<\/p>\n

\u201cI quickly ran over and gave two abdominal thrusts, dislodging the food the second time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt all happened so quickly and there was no time to think about it. I\u2019m just glad I could help,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n

“It was a very scary experience not being able to breathe, and I am extremely grateful that Va\u2019Shawn was there to help,\u201d said Arbaugh, senior regional outreach liaison for UTMC\u2019s Outreach Department. \u201cHis heroic efforts are to be commended; I can’t thank Va\u2019Shawn enough for his quick thinking and immediate action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robinson said he has taken emergency training classes that taught him procedures such as the Heimlich maneuver. However, he never thought he would have to use the skills.<\/p>\n
