Edwards School of Medicine. He will begin July 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy time in Toledo has been tremendously rewarding, both for its professional rewards and due to the countless friendships I will take with me to West Virginia,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cMarshall University represents an exciting challenge, and I am looking forward to working with the medical community there to advance health care and increase clinical research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro came to the Medical College of Ohio from the University of Colorado in 1997 and was appointed chair of the Department of Medicine in 1999. With more than a dozen patents on medical inventions, Shapiro added business development to his portfolio in 2006.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_17202\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Cooper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17202\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Cooper.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"University Health Matters commercial stills of Dr. Christopher Cooper.\" width=\"389\" height=\"508\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Cooper.jpg 389w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Cooper-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Christopher Cooper will serve as interim chair of the Department of Medicine.<\/p><\/div>\u201cThe University of Toledo\u2019s loss is a tremendous gain for physicians, faculty and medical students at Marshall University,\u201d said Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, UT chancellor, executive vice president for biosciences and health affairs, and dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences.<\/p>\n<p><P>Gold announced that Dr. Christopher Cooper, professor and chief of the division of cardiovascular medicine, will serve as interim chair of the Department of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris\u2019 history of excellence in patient care and clinical research makes him the ideal candidate to take over following Joe Shapiro\u2019s departure,\u201d Gold said. \u201cI have no doubt the department will continue to advance under Chris\u2019 leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added Shapiro, \u201cI think that Chris is an internationally known thought leader in clinical research, and one of the very best faculty members to be found at any medical school. I am certain that the department will thrive under his excellent leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since his arrival in 1994, Cooper said he has seen The University of Toledo take tremendous strides forward in care it provides patients, its residency and fellowship programs, and its clinical research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Shapiro led the Department of Medicine through a tremendous period of growth in research and clinical productivity.
