<\/a>Smith<\/p><\/div>Faculty, staff, alumni and students are invited to remember William R. Smith, professor emeritus of theatre, Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Center for Performing Arts.<\/P><\/p>\n
The man known for detailed set and costume designs died Sept. 14 at age 74 in his Toledo home.<\/p>\n
Join family and friends at 4 p.m. in the lobby for drinks and hors d\u2019oeuvres. The memorial will begin at 4:45 p.m.; cake and coffee will be served in the lobby after the service.<\/p>\n
Smith joined the UT Department of Theatre in 1972, and his creativity always was in the spotlight. He conceptualized and supervised construction of costumes for more than 50 University productions, including \u201cEvita,\u201d \u201cThe House of Blue Leaves,\u201d \u201cOur Town,\u201d \u201cThe Glass Menagerie,\u201d \u201cRing Around the Moon,\u201d \u201cOrchard\u201d and \u201cTravesties.\u201d<\/p>\n
His set designs graced the stage for \u201cThe Visit,\u201d \u201cThe Measures Taken,\u201d \u201cThe Way of the World,\u201d \u201cThe Miser,\u201d \u201cDangerous Liaisons\u201d and \u201cMonkey Music.\u201d<\/p>\n
Smith\u2019s baritone voice echoed throughout the theater during rehearsals for UT plays that he directed: \u201cCandide,\u201d \u201cAgnes of God,\u201d \u201cMedea,\u201d \u201cThe Scarf,\u201d \u201cEquus,\u201d \u201cChicago\u201d and \u201cBent.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 1992, he was named professor emeritus.<\/p>\n
Tributes are suggested to the William R. Smith Alumni Fund, which will be used for student professional development to cover the cost of travel and registration for conferences, as well as to bring in visiting artists to conduct workshops.
