{"id":24885,"date":"2013-04-30T04:58:28","date_gmt":"2013-04-30T09:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=24885"},"modified":"2013-04-29T09:44:59","modified_gmt":"2013-04-29T14:44:59","slug":"presidents-of-federal-reserve-bank-of-cleveland-battelle-memorial-institute-to-address-graduates-may-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_30_2013\/presidents-of-federal-reserve-bank-of-cleveland-battelle-memorial-institute-to-address-graduates-may-5","title":{"rendered":"Presidents of Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Battelle Memorial Institute to address graduates May 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The presidents of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and Battelle Memorial Institute will speak at The University of Toledo\u2019s commencement ceremonies Sunday, May 5.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_24967\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Pianalto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24967\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Pianalto.jpg\" alt=\"Pianalto\" width=\"180\" height=\"222\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24967\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pianalto<\/p><\/div>During the morning ceremony, Sandra Pianalto, who has been president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland since 2003, will speak to graduates from the colleges of Business and Innovation, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Visual and Performing Arts, and Languages, Literature and Social Sciences at 9:30 a.m. in Savage Arena.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>At the afternoon ceremony, Dr. Jeff Wadsworth, president and CEO of the Battelle Memorial Institute since 2009, will address graduates from the Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Service and the College of Adult and Lifelong Learning at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>There are 3,041 candidates for degrees \u2014 886 candidates for doctoral, education specialist and master\u2019s degrees, and 2,155 for bachelor\u2019s and associate\u2019s degrees. Each ceremony will be webcast live on <a href=\"http:\/\/video.utoledo.edu\/\">video.utoledo.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are honored to have such accomplished professionals as Sandra Pianalto and Jeff Wadsworth at this celebration of academic achievement,\u201d UT President Lloyd Jacobs said. \u201cThese individuals know well the value of higher education and have gone on to do incredible things within their professions and as productive members of their communities. They are both positive role models for our graduates as they move forward in the next chapter of their lives equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills taught by our wonderful faculty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_24968\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Wadsworth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24968\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Wadsworth.jpg\" alt=\"Wadsworth\" width=\"180\" height=\"220\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24968\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24968\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wadsworth<\/p><\/div>Pianalto will receive an honorary doctor of business administration and Wadsworth an honorary doctor of engineering. Also receiving an honorary degree will be Robert Savage, a distinguished UT alumnus and co-founder of the Savage &#038; Associates insurance and financial management business in Toledo.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Pianalto began her career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland in 1983 as an economist in the research department. In 20 years, she ascended to assistant vice president of public affairs, vice president and secretary to the board of directors, first vice president and chief operating officer, and finally president and CEO \u2014 a position she\u2019s held for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Her professional success comes directly from her understanding of the importance of education. The daughter of Italian immigrants who came to America more than 50 years ago, Pianalto had helped them study for their United States citizenship examinations as a third-grader.<\/p>\n<p>Pianalto went on to receive bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in economics from the university of Akron and George Washington University, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Wadsworth is president and CEO of Battelle Memorial Institute, which is the world\u2019s largest nonprofit research and development organization. Formed in 1925 in Columbus, Battelle has developed the Xerox machine and a number of innovations in medical technology, telecommunications, environmental waste treatment, homeland security and transportation.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_24969\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Savage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24969\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Savage.jpg\" alt=\"Savage\" width=\"180\" height=\"221\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24969\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Savage<\/p><\/div>Before his current position, Wadsworth led Battelle\u2019s Global Laboratory Operations business; he oversaw the management of six national laboratories of the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security\u2019s National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Wadsworth earned a bachelor\u2019s degree and doctorate in metallurgy from Sheffield University in England.
