University of Toledo external research funding approached $55 million in fiscal year 2013, a surge of more than $6 million, UT officials announced last week.<\/p>\n
UT researchers were awarded $54,749,355 in federal, state and other grants, including an increase of $5.65 million in federal grants alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is such an impressive accomplishment for University of Toledo faculty, particularly during a time when federal funding is being dramatically reduced,\u201d said Dr. James Trempe, vice president for research. <\/p>\n
Trempe referred primarily to cuts to the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and executive branch departments that have fewer funds to distribute following several rounds of budget cuts at the federal level, including the recent sequester. <\/p>\n
\u201cEven with federal funds shrinking and national competition increasing, UT federal research funding rose,\u201d Trempe said. \u201cEvery year I learn more about the caliber of our faculty, and every year I\u2019m more and more impressed with their expertise and passion for the work they do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among the colleges, the College of Engineering recorded an increase of $5.3 million compared to last year, while the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics marked an increase of $4.3 million.<\/p>\n
