{"id":27558,"date":"2013-11-14T04:11:31","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T09:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=27558"},"modified":"2013-11-12T13:57:17","modified_gmt":"2013-11-12T18:57:17","slug":"deinstitutionalization-anti-prison-activism-topic-of-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/11_14_2013\/deinstitutionalization-anti-prison-activism-topic-of-talk","title":{"rendered":"Deinstitutionalization, anti-prison activism topic of Nov. 18 talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Liat Ben-Moshe, UT assistant professor of disability studies, will give a talk discussing the activism behind abolishing the prison system in the Unites States as well as institutions for people labeled intellectually disabled.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_27601\" style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ben-Moshe-vertical-by-Dan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27601\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ben-Moshe-vertical-by-Dan.jpg\" alt=\"Ben-Moshe\" width=\"292\" height=\"389\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ben-Moshe-vertical-by-Dan.jpg 292w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ben-Moshe-vertical-by-Dan-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-27601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben-Moshe<\/p><\/div>The free, public event will take place Monday, Nov. 18, at 3:30 p.m. in the Canaday Center in Carlson Library.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Her talk is titled \u201cAbolition Politics: Deinstitutionalization and Anti-Prison Activism in the U.S.\u201d She will connect the activism behind closing down institutions for people known as intellectually disabled, as well as psychiatric hospitals and prisons.<\/p>\n<p>Ben-Moshe believes attempting to reform prisons and institutions does not work and that a new approach is needed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need to reform these places; we don\u2019t need to make them prettier or have more education programs; we need to close them down,\u201d Ben-Moshe said. \u201cMore radical approaches need to be taken as opposed to specific narrow approaches to issues of crime and disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The talk is targeted to people who don\u2019t really know anything about these fields, she added. One goal is to let people know what is happening in this country in terms of incarceration and institutionalization and also to educate them about the resilience of the activism around it.   <\/p>\n<p>Ben-Moshe began teaching at UT in August. Previously, she taught at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
