{"id":29215,"date":"2014-04-03T03:13:07","date_gmt":"2014-04-03T07:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=29215"},"modified":"2014-04-02T13:35:42","modified_gmt":"2014-04-02T17:35:42","slug":"mit-mathematician-to-give-online-talk-april-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_03_2014\/mit-mathematician-to-give-online-talk-april-9","title":{"rendered":"MIT mathematician to give online talk April 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Gilbert Strang, a renowned mathematician who has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for more than 50 years, will give an online presentation Wednesday, April 9.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_29294\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Strang-Sitting-At-Desk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29294\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Strang-Sitting-At-Desk.jpg\" alt=\"Strang\" width=\"378\" height=\"511\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Strang-Sitting-At-Desk.jpg 378w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Strang-Sitting-At-Desk-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Strang<\/p><\/div>His free, public talk, \u201cTeaching Online (Even Massive Open Online Courses) and the Math of Tridiagonal Matrices,\u201d will take place at 7:30 p.m. and can be viewed in Memorial Field House Room 2100.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>\u201cThis talk has two connected parts \u2014 both parts strongly connected with the audience,\u201d Strang said. \u201cIt begins with unusual graphs \u2014 simple to create, hard to believe. This will be a small example of online teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strang will share a bigger example of online teaching with a few minutes of MIT OpenCourseWare. He teaches Introduction to Linear Algebra and Computational Science and Engineering, both available as web lectures at <a href=\"http:\/\/ocw.mit.edu\/index.htm\">ocw.mit.edu<\/a>. More than four million have watched the classes online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA massive open online course is a big undertaking; it needs feedback on the past and present if it is to succeed in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Since joining the MIT faculty in 1962, Strang has thrived.
