{"id":30403,"date":"2014-07-18T03:44:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-18T07:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=30403"},"modified":"2014-07-17T14:48:28","modified_gmt":"2014-07-17T18:48:28","slug":"lake-erie-center-to-host-science-program-for-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/07_18_2014\/lake-erie-center-to-host-science-program-for-kids","title":{"rendered":"Lake Erie Center to host science program for kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From partaking in scavenger hunts, dissecting owl pellets, and building water cycles to collecting insects and sampling a pond, Nature of Maumee Bay Lake Erie Center Science Program attendees engage in hands-on learning at The University of Toledo\u2019s Lake Erie Center. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/lake-erie-center-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/lake-erie-center-logo.png\" alt=\"lake erie center logo\" width=\"120\" height=\"97\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25653\" \/><\/a>This summer the UT Lake Erie Center will host a science camp, which features laboratory exercises, art and outdoor activities, for children entering fourth or fifth grade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s good that the kids get some science content to keep them fresh over the summer, but we try to make it in a fun and exciting manner,\u201d said Rachel Lohner, UT Lake Erie Center education program manager. \u201cWe don\u2019t use textbooks; we do it a little differently than hopefully during the school year and actually get them outside experiencing things from a hands-on perspective. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to spur their interest and maybe steer them into science, technology, engineering or math careers in the future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The one-day mini-camp will take place Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have a cutting-edge research center that we\u2019re able to use as our home base. The kids are actually able to go through the labs and interact with the researchers.
