{"id":31092,"date":"2014-09-22T03:42:23","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T07:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=31092"},"modified":"2014-09-19T16:45:43","modified_gmt":"2014-09-19T20:45:43","slug":"join-ut-in-celebrating-right-to-read-freely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_22_2014\/join-ut-in-celebrating-right-to-read-freely","title":{"rendered":"Join UT in celebrating right to read freely, visit vigil Sept. 25"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Independent thinkers across the country, including UT students, faculty and staff, and Toledo-area citizens, will celebrate freedom of expression during the 17th Annual UT Banned Books Week Vigil Thursday, Sept. 25.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Banned-Books-Week-2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Banned-Books-Week-2014.jpg\" alt=\"Banned Books Week 2014\" width=\"576\" height=\"213\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-31095\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Banned-Books-Week-2014.jpg 576w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Banned-Books-Week-2014-300x110.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a>Inspired by the American Library Association\u2019s Banned Books Week, the event will start at 9 a.m. and run through 5 p.m. in the Carl Joseph Memorial Reading Commons on the fifth floor of Carlson Library.\t <\/p>\n<p>In 20-minute presentations every half hour, speakers from the University and surrounding community will talk about censorship and the importance of personal reading. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event creates solidarity within the community while celebrating the right to read freely,\u201d Dr. Paulette Kilmer, UT professor of communication, said. <\/p>\n<p>This year a tribute to Stan Lee will recognize his efforts to end comic book censorship in 1971. He challenged the Comic Magazine Association of America\u2019s restrictive code that was established in 1954.  <\/p>\n<p>In addition, Dr. David Tucker, UT professor of communication, will deliver the Dr. Linda Smith Lecture, \u201cA Deck of Cards,\u201d at 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, snacks and refreshments will be available, along with door prizes that include donated banned books and other goods.<\/p>\n<p>Topics and speakers for the event will be:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 9 a.m. \u2014 \u201cCelebrating Reading\u201d by Marcia King-Blandford, interim director of UT Libraries, and Dr. Jeffrey Wilkinson, UT professor and chair of communication; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 9:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cThe Dr. Linda Smith Lecture: \u2018A Deck of Cards\u2019\u201d by Dr. David Tucker, UT professor of communication;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 10:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cCensorship in Black: Hurston, Ellison and Baldwin\u201d by LaVelle Ridley, UT Jesup Scott Honors College student; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 11 a.m. \u2014 \u201cThe Dynamics of Expression in the Invisible Prison\u201d by Dr. Renee Heberle, UT professor of political science; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 11:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cA Ban Against Women&#8217;s Rights and Freedoms \u2014 A Historical Perspective\u201d by Warren Woodberry, Toledo author; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Noon \u2014 \u201cAvoiding the Echo Chamber: The Benefit of Dissenting Opinion\u201d by Sarah Ottney, managing editor of the Toledo Free Press; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 12:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cPresident Obama&#8217;s Fave Novel: Censoring Toni Morrison&#8217;s <em>Song of Solomon\u201d<\/em> by Dr. Glenn Sheldon, UT professor of humanities and faculty member of the Jesup Scott Honors College;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 1 p.m. \u2014 \u201cPinball, Peep Shows and Pulp Fiction: A Brief History of Censorship in Northwest Ohio\u201d by Dr. Michael Brooks, Bowling Green State University professor of history and graduate coordinator; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 1:30 p.m. \u2014 Screening of \u201cVideo Moments With Stan Lee and Living Action Heroes Inspired by Comic Books\u201d;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 2 p.m. \u2014 &#8220;Graphic and Explicit Content: The Censorship of Horror Video Games&#8221; by Torrie Jadlocki, UT communication student; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 2:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cJeopardy!\u201d led by Amanda Eggert, editor in chief of The Independent Collegian, and Samantha Rhodes, managing editor of The Independent Collegian; <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 3 p.m. \u2014 \u201cThose @#%$#^ [Beep\u2026..] Censors: What Are They Looking for?\u201d by Arjun Sabharwal, UT assistant professor of library administration;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 3:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cYou Can&#8217;t Read That!!!\u201d by Cindy Ramirez, English teacher at Bedford Senior High School;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 4 p.m. \u2014 \u201cFilthy Words or Uplifting Story?
