{"id":32106,"date":"2014-12-11T03:54:49","date_gmt":"2014-12-11T07:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=32106"},"modified":"2020-10-21T14:31:09","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T18:31:09","slug":"utmc-physician-assistant-receives-20-under-40-leadership-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/12_11_2014\/utmc-physician-assistant-receives-20-under-40-leadership-award","title":{"rendered":"UTMC physician assistant receives 20 Under 40 Leadership Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, leaders in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan are honored with the 20 Under 40 Leadership Recognition Award for contributions to their community. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_32177\" style=\"width: 298px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Martino.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32177\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Martino.jpg\" alt=\"Martino\" width=\"288\" height=\"393\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Martino.jpg 288w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Martino-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martino<\/p><\/div>Sara Martino, a physician assistant in the Emergency Department at The University of Toledo Medical Center, is a recipient of one of the 2014 awards. <\/p>\n<p>Martino was nominated for the award by Katie Bush, a nurse in the UTMC Emergency Department, who has worked with Martino for four years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSara\u2019s very driven and inspiring,\u201d Bush said. \u201cShe juggles a lot \u2014 being a full-time mom, full-time worker and full-time volunteer.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Bush said Martino was the reason that she decided to join the Junior League.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe deserves the award,\u201d Bush said. \u201cShe\u2019s one of our leaders. She does a lot for others without asking for anything in return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martino exemplifies the 20 Under 40 Award through her extensive community involvement. She has worked with the Junior League for eight years and currently serves is sustainer representative to the Volunteer Resources Council and has served as the nominating and placement chair and board secretary. <\/p>\n<p>One Junior League event that Martino was especially proud to be part of was Kids in the Kitchen, where children learn how to eat healthy and exercise. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that giving back to the community is one of the best things I can do,\u201d Martino said. \u201cI want my kids to see how important it is to give back and be involved in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saying Martino is involved in the community is an understatement. She is:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Chi Omega representative for the Northwest Ohio Panhellenic Chapter;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 President of the Woodland Parent\u2019s Club;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Member of the executive board for Perrysburg Amateur Baseball\/Softball Commission;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Popcorn chair for Perrysburg Cub Scouts Pack 110; and <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 An annual volunteer for Toledo\u2019s Tent City.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, she previously served as Region 5 director of the Ohio Association of Physician Assistants for three years and sat on the Governmental Affairs Committee, and was treasurer and vice president of the Northwest Ohio Chi Omega Alumnae Association.<\/p>\n<p>For her efforts, Martino has received the 2014 UT Services to Students Award in 2014, and the UT Health and Human Services Young Alum Award at Homecoming in 2013. She also has been recognized by Toledo Parent News as the January Yark Mom in 2012 and was the 2012 recipient of the Junior League of Toledo\u2019s Power of Woman Award.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being involved in her community, Martino is on UTMC\u2019s Infectious Disease Team, which includes staff specially trained to care for infectious patients. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love UTMC,\u201d Martino said. \u201cI\u2019ve been working here since I was 19 years old. When I come here, it\u2019s like a second home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martino received a bachelor of science degree in exercise science from UT; a master\u2019s degree in health education and promotion from the UT, Bowling Green State University and MCO consortium program; and a master\u2019s degree in physician assistant studies from UTMC.
