Kilmer, UT professor of communication and one of the organizers of the event. \u201cEvery fall, we join with libraries, educational places and civic centers across the nation to recognize the role of reading and thinking freely in our democratic society where everyone matters and knowledge is often the key to making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kilmer and event committee members Dr. Linda Smith, UT senior lecturer in the Honors Program, Brian Hickam, UT assistant professor of library administration, and Elaine Reeves, UT lecturer and information literacy librarian, have met off and on for the past year to coordinate the event.<\/p>\n<p>In the fourth week of September for more than two decades, the American Library Association, the Book Sellers of America and hundreds of other sponsors of Banned Books Week have inspired citizens across the nation to plan events celebrating intellectual freedom.<\/p>\n<p>During UT\u2019s event, banned books, T-shirts, mugs, coupons and other items will be given as door prizes throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>Topics and speakers for the vigil will be:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 9 a.m. \u2014 \u201cSpeech, Reading and the Banning of Thoughts\u201d by Dr. Jim Benjamin, UT professor and chair of communication, after greetings from Dr. Marcia Suter, UT associate professor and director of library services;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 9:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cRadical Islamists and Fear of Radical Islamists \u2014 Both Are Significant Threats to Free Speech\u201d by Dr. Douglas Oliver, UT associate professor of mechanical, industrial and manufacturing engineering;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 10 a.m. \u2014 \u201cWhen Censorship Goes Soft: The Case of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and the Publication of <em>One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich\u201d<\/em> by Dr. Larry D. Connin, UT administrative coordinator for the Honors Program;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 10:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cWe Are Strangers\u201d by Warren Woodbury, Toledo author;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 11 a.m. \u2014 <em>\u201c1984: <\/em>From Orwell to Amazon\u201d by Dr. Paul Many, UT professor of communication;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 11:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cThe Book Corner TV Show,\u201d a performance by Dr. K and the IC Players \u2014 Kilmer and Independent Collegian Editor in Chief Joe Griffith, Sports Editor Zach Davis, Assistant Sports Editor Michael Bauman and Staff Writer Jason Mack;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Noon \u2014 keynote address, \u201cBook Burning in Nazi Germany,\u201d by Dr. Larry Wilcox, UT professor emeritus of history;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 1 p.m. \u2014 \u201cCensorship, Dissent and Etiquette\u201d by Dr. Ben Pryor, UT associate professor and chair of philosophy;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 1:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cRemembering Judith Krug: Librarian and Founder of Banned Books Week\u201d by Reeves;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 2 p.m. \u2014 \u201cIndecency in Broadcasting: Why Bother?\u201d by Dr. David Tucker, UT associate professor of communication;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 2:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cThe Politics of Bad Ideas\u201d by Dr. Carter Wilson, UT professor of political science;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 3 p.m. \u2014 \u201cJeopardy!\u201d with Hickam and Reeves;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 3:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cCensoring Bob Dylan in the Sixties\u201d by Dr. Tom Barden, UT professor of English and director of the Honors Program;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 4 p.m. \u2014 \u201cFeminism Does Not Equal Censorship: Toward a Feminist Politics of Representation\u201d by Dr. Renee Heberle, UT associate professor of political science;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 4:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cHomosexuality in Children\u2019s Books\u201d by Dr. Sharon Barnes, UT associate professor of interdisciplinary studies; and<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 5 p.m. \u2014 Poetry reading by Dr. Glen Sheldon, UT associate professor of interdisciplinary studies, who will read \u201cThe Story of Giles Corey,\u201d an original poem he penned for the vigil.<\/p>\n<p>Benefactors of the free, public event are the Society of Professional Journalists, the University Honors Program, The Independent Collegian, University Libraries, UT Department of Communication, UT English Department, and the UT Theatre and Film Department.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors who contributed door prizes and food include Barry Bagels, Curb\u2019s Candle Co., Dunkin\u2019 Doughnuts, Glacity Theatre Collective, People Called Women, Rite Aid Pharmacy at Westgate, Toledo Free Press, UT Bookstore, UT Business Technology, UT Career Services, UT-MUO Federal Credit Union, UT Starbucks, and UT Theatre and Film Department.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the free, public event, contact Kilmer at 419.530.4672 or paulette.kilmer@utoledo.edu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrate the right to read!
