{"id":36008,"date":"2015-09-29T03:52:37","date_gmt":"2015-09-29T07:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=36008"},"modified":"2015-09-28T16:22:53","modified_gmt":"2015-09-28T20:22:53","slug":"university-schedules-events-for-lgbtqa-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_29_2015\/university-schedules-events-for-lgbtqa-history-month","title":{"rendered":"University schedules events for LGBTQA History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toledo will celebrate LGBTQA History Month with several events this October.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Multicultural Student Success, LGBTQA Initiatives and Spectrum UT are dedicated to serving the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and allied students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is important to celebrate LGBT History Month because, like any other marginalized group, LGBT people&#8217;s history has been erased from popular media. It&#8217;s critical to know how LGBT people got to where we are today, with things such as marriage equality and representation in TV and film,\u201d said Jack Alferio, president of Spectrum UT.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/LGBTQA-poster-2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/LGBTQA-poster-2015.jpg\" alt=\"LGBTQA poster 2015\" width=\"468\" height=\"627\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-36074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/LGBTQA-poster-2015.jpg 468w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/LGBTQA-poster-2015-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a>\u201cAlthough we have come very far since the Compton Cafeteria Riots, the event that is recognized as being the beginning of the LGBT rights movement, we still have a long way to go,\u201d Alferio added. \u201cThe fact that LGBT people have not reached true liberation from oppression is why we continue to celebrate LGBT History Month each October.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Listed by date, events scheduled to increase awareness for LGBTQA History Month include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, Oct. 1<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022  \u201cLearn the Facts,\u201d 8 p.m., Student Union Room 2591.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, Oct. 8<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 \u201cGender Spectrum,\u201d 8 p.m., Student Union Room 2592.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday, Oct. 12<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 LGBTQA History Month Celebration, 7 to 9 p.m., Student Union Ingman Room.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, Oct. 13<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 All Love Photo Shoot, 3 to 5 p.m., Student Union Room 2500.
