{"id":36595,"date":"2015-11-02T03:05:48","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T07:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=36595"},"modified":"2020-10-21T15:22:19","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T19:22:19","slug":"ut-researcher-discovers-new-way-to-treat-brain-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/11_02_2015\/ut-researcher-discovers-new-way-to-treat-brain-cancer","title":{"rendered":"UT researcher discovers new way to treat brain cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A scientist at The University of Toledo has discovered a potential way to stop the spreading of the most lethal brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kathryn Eisenmann, UT assistant professor of biochemistry and cancer biology, worked with Van Andel Research Institute on this study, which was published online Sept. 9 by the American Society of Cell Biology in the journal Molecular Biology of the Cell.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_36714\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Eisenmann.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36714\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Eisenmann.jpg\" alt=\"Eisenmann\" width=\"252\" height=\"382\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Eisenmann.jpg 252w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Eisenmann-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36714\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eisenmann<\/p><\/div>Eisenmann\u2019s team, led by first author and UT MD\/PhD graduate student Jessica Arden, found that cancer cells that cause GBM can potentially be stopped with a drug developed by Van Andel Research Institute Professor Arthur Alberts. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most lethal part about GBM is that the cells move so rapidly,\u201d Eisenmann said. \u201cWe want to keep the cells in one place so they don\u2019t spread to vital parts of the brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In previous research, Alberts discovered a bioactive peptide called DAD and small molecules called intramimics. Both DAD and intramimics activate a family of proteins called DIAPHs or mDIA, which are known to play vital roles in GBM spread. He had been exploring the use of the drug for colon cancer treatment.  <\/p>\n<p>Eisenmann decided to see if his research could be applied to GBM, which is the most common brain tumor in adults. In 2010, there were 22,000 cases in the United States.
